Medical and Healthcare

One could describe the healthcare available in Antigua as adequate. Although we have a host of general practitioners and specialists on the island some more serious conditions would require transit to other islands and the standard of care available may not meet western expectations. It is imperative to obtain a good quality medical insurance.

Mount St Johns Medical Center is the main hospital facility on the island. Although its new building and facilities are impressively clean and modern the standard of doctor and nursing care is still well below western standards. Their facilities include a casualty department, maternity, special care unit for premature babies, childrens ward, radiology, pathology laboratory, intensive care unit, surgery and pharmacy.

Adelin Clinic is a provider of private care as an alternative to the main hospital. Their facilities are certainly not as modern as the main hospital however some people prefer the higher standard of care and attention provided here. They have facilities for Emergency Care, Minor Surgeries and Operations, Obstetrics and Gynecology, ENT Surgery, Pediatrics, Orthopedics. There is a 24-hour pharmacy located in the capital St Johns and a large well stocked pharmacy at the Woods Mall shopping center. For those residing near Jolly Harbour there is a small family run pharmacy in the commercial center. There is also a pharmacy at the Belmont Clinic mentioned above.
